Wiltshire Farm Foods, as part of apetito, are proud to announce that we have been named winners of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation Category – the UK’s highest accolade for business success. We are especially proud to receive this prestigious award in the year of the Queen’s 90th birthday.
We have received this award in Innovation for our world leading Softer Foods range of Texture Modified meals suitable for people living with dysphagia covering categories C, D and E of the National Descriptors.
For those with dysphagia living on a texture modified diet, a loss of dignity and enjoyment of food can be a real danger. The blending and puréeing process can take away taste, nutrition, calories and any form of visual appeal from food. We set our chefs a goal to develop an alternative. In January 2010 we launched a new range of 56 Texture-Modified dishes (covering categories C & D). We developed not only a range that meets the texture guidelines but also brings back the dignity in dining for our customers with dysphagia. Our Head Chef Phil Rimmer and his team worked tirelessly to create dishes that tasted delicious and were shaped to look visually appealing, this took many months of hard work learning all the time along the way. We have since made the addition of several Category C Puréed sandwiches and a range of main meals for Category E. The size of the range is now 75 dishes.
At Wiltshire Farm Foods we work closely with Healthcare Professionals to understand how we can help their patients. Research has shown that a staggering 48% of people with dysphagia are malnourished and are lacking essential nutrients. In March 2016, after 3 years of development, we launched our new range of Purée Petite category C meals that were designed to tackle this issue head on. Each meal is 40% smaller than our existing category C meals, but has at least 500 calories and 15g of protein, so even if a customer has a reduced appetite they will still get the nutrients they require.
We invested extensively in new equipment and the development of innovative technology to guarantee the exact textures, fantastic flavours and great appearance that our customers expect from our meals. This investment combined with the skill, experience and passion of our dedicated team has resulted in a range which we believe to be truly world leading.
The Softer Foods range makes a real difference to the quality of life of thousands of people living with dysphagia throughout the UK. Winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise is a fantastic recognition of this and something that every member of our team is truly proud of.
We understand that finding tasty, nutritious and visually-appealing pureed, pre-mashed and fork mashable meals can be difficult, which is why our range offers a delicious variety of sweet and savoury dishes to really meet our customer’s needs. There’s no reason why someone with dysphagia shouldn’t be able to enjoy tasty, appealing, nutritious food just like anyone else – Helen Willis BSc RD, Dietitian
