This is the medical term used to describe swallowing difficulties with DYS meaning ‘difficulty’ and PHAGIA meaning ‘to eat’.
This is not to be confused with the term Dysphasia which is a language problem caused by damage to the communication centres of the brain.
Category B – Thin Purée
Category B – Thin Purée is the national descriptor for a smooth thin purée that cannot be eaten by a fork. The texture of the purée is such that it spreads out if spilled and can be poured.
Category C – Thick Purée
Category C – Thick Purée is the national descriptor for a thick purée meal. The prongs of a fork should make a clear pattern on the surface. It cannot be poured and does not spread out if spilled.
